Wand got sh*t on it. lol
I'da killed Riri as soon as I got the wand from her. She's not real, so no crime.
okay netflix or whoever subbed this
in the previous episode Anzu already called her a girl, so why use they/them for Riri?
also I don't think they/them is commonly used in Japan so.. why?
Because that fat purple haired thing is in charge of the translation. Be grateful that there's no forced political opinions squeezed in... so far.
Ah it's prob a mistranslation but
Yeah, spoiler for the latest episodes, but as a French speaker where EVERYTHING is gendered, calling anyone by some "gender neutral" pronoms feels unnatural. I'd switch back and forth between "he" and "she" depends how the thing look.
Lol
English 101 here. Singular "they" has been used since forever in common english and is used more often than "he" or "she" regardless of gender even before this whole pronoun discussion. Using singular "they" even when a gender is known is absolutely normal and perfectly acceptable english..
The japanese term here is Anohito (あの人) which is a gender neutral pronoun. It can mean either he/she or "That person". Which perfectly translates to singular "They". If you want to blame anyone, blame the Japanese for not using a gendered pronoun.
Native (British) english speakers use singular "they" all the time even when gender is known.
"They called in sick today" talking about a guy
"They left their wallet at work" talking about a girl
It's perfectly normal and has nothing to do with "preferred gender-neutral pronouns" it's common english in any sentence where the gender is context irrelevant.
no I understand that lol. It's just.. unusual in animes subtitles.
like, in other animes, especially older animes, even if a person's gender is unknown, even if the person turns out
"they" is RARELY used in animes subtitles.
I also get that doubt a lot if i should ask about personal matters or not. Sometimes i'm curious and really want to ask, but i'm afraid of putting the person in a uncomfortable spot. Maybe it's just me being a weeb and having little social skills but i feel like you should never ask about complicated issues. At the same time, i can't help but notice you are losing an opportunity to connect deeper with that person. The anime is just making me reflect a bit, have a nice day.
RIP Anzu, poor Junta deserves to develop a real romance with someone if he wants. Riri is such a menace.
I love the ending song!
I wish they would stop using they/them to refer to Riri, it confuses me every time, only he/him and she/her are valid pronouns. Stop trying to force that non-binary nonsense in everything.
I actually am against it for a different reason - they are spoiling us by using they/them instead of she/her.
I haven't finished the show yet so I don't know what it's spoiling, but if it's about the fact that Riri can also change into a human boy, I think the opening already spoiled that.
Ah damn I didn't notice that 😂 but yeah the pronouns were unnecessary regardless since it's not even present in Japanese language spoken there
Anohito (あの人) Which is used here can mean either "he" or "she" or just "that person". So using singular "they" would be the best translation for this. I've already typed an essay about the use of singular "they" in a previous comment, but it's been used in (british) english since forever (like since 14th century or something) when gender of the individual is context irrelevant. The only people that get upset about the use of singular "they" are non-native english speakers or people that think everything is a lgbtq agenda.
Using "they" to refer to a single person only makes sense when you're speaking in hypotheticals (e.g. "if a person wants to bake a cake, they need to get flour and eggs") or if you don't know the person's gender because you haven't actually met them face-to-face (e.g. "my brother told me he made a new friend, I hope they're nice"). Because in a sane world there's no reason to not know a person's gender when you're seeing them in front of you. So it just doesn't feel natural to me that the FMC would think of Riri as "they" when she/he's right in front of her. Even if I was unsure about a person's gender after meeting them (which, again, in a sane world wouldn't be an issue), I'd still mentally think of them with either he or she pronouns. Most people are naturally predisposed to assigning one or the other. I've seen fans slip up and refer to characters they insist are non-binary as he or she, they're just forcing themselves to use they/them to keep up this illusion of gender being a "social construct".
In (British) English, singular "they" gets used more often than "he" or "she" even when gender is known but context irrelevant. It's been used like that for centuries and I find it kinda pathetic that people are now getting upset by it because they're so anti-lgbtq that they have to see it in that context.
Yeah well, I'm not trying to hide the fact that I'm anti-lgbt and I don't care if you think I'm pathetic, because I also think you're pathetic for replying to every single other comment here that has an issue with the pronouns with the same essay. Clearly you're taking this personally for some reason.
Yeah, and because you're anti-lgbt, you think the usage of singular they has something to do with the gender of the person that's being talked about, and I'm trying to educate people on the fact that singular they doesn't have anything to do with gender 90% of the time. And yes, as an English teacher I take it personally.
Okay that's way too far
ZA SHIRT!!!
ZA WORLDUUUUU!!!
This is more entertaining than I thought it would be
I find it amazing how Anzu calls Riri with “They/Them” instead of “She/Her”. Sasuga Netflix-kun.😂
first world problems
Anohito (あの人) means he/she, or that person aka singular "they".
Blame the japanese for not using a gendered pronoun.
Also tell me you're not a native english speaker without telling me you're not a native english speaker....
Thiefs nowadays steal underwear instead of Money Jewelleries?
why? for the love of... why?!!!! mandatory underwear thief with undies on head *eye roll*
idk who im rooting for lmao.. junta is adorable and he cares for anzu a lot but i also like the bond that kazuki and anzu share.
Riri should live with them too. As Anzu's cousin.
Still laughing
HAHA i am not even surprised to what's going to happen next
ROFL, what a petty person, that underwear thief. I guess that's typical if you break and enter to sniff ladies' underwear I guess. I can't imagine that smells nice. More like sweaty or like period if you're unlucky...
I mean I could somewhat see a twisted sort of sense in sniffing used underwear. But the dude wasn´t even doing that. He went for the clean underwear from the moms wardrobe. So basically he broke into somebody´s home to sniff common laundry detergent...
The man doesn't know how to properly do his own, it keeps being smelly even after the washing machine was used so he goes to the houses of moms because they in general do know how to make clothes smell good :'D
it was a power trip
lol and now I can't get enough of this anime 😂
truly a romcom
and yeah i kinda like this tsundere stuff more since she loves her hobbies more than getting into relationships which is relatable af
Damn should have murdered that demon bean while it was still human!
